Ohio, we have a problem!
A disturbing image of a nursing home recently shook residents in the state of Ohio. After the photo of a senior patient bending over an office desk surfaced in the media, the people demanded answers. In the snap, we can see an 80-year-old woman just slumping over an office desk, without any reasonable background story to follow.
After being discovered by staffers, the old lady’s son noted his mom was fighting for air and was actually choking on her own saliva.
The patient in question is 80-year-old Esther Brown, who was a resident at the Altercare Nobles Pond in Canton. Her son, James Brown and all her family raised suspicions of a possible foul play at the home and broke the story to the public to raise awareness.
What Happened to Ether?
When James paid his mom an unexpected visit at the nursing home, he wasn’t ready for what he was about to witness. On Saturday, just as he arrived to the institution, Brown found his mom unresponsive and faced down over a desk, with a pillow in her lap. The woman was located in a private room and there were no other patients or staffers in there to help.
The family pastor, Julia Wiggins, also shaken by the happening, decided to release two unsettling images of the woman. Her goal was to alert families to not rely on the care of nursing homes alone, and to make sure their family members are well taken care of.
Wiggins Goes on Facebook
The pastor took to Facebook to get the crowd informed on what is happening in nursing homes behind closed doors. In Esther’s case, Wiggins discovered the woman was transferred to a private room recently, without any obvious reason for it.
“I noticed something in the corner of the nurses” station. After being inquisitive we approached the subject only to find out that it was Mother Esther Brown face down into a soft pillow gasping for breath and strangling on her own saliva,’ Wiggins reported.
“We were there banging on doors and yelling for help for about 5 to 10 minutes before someone came to assist. Her son began to cry out that’s my momma and we hurried to her and upon hearing her son’s voice she tried with all her might to raise her head!”
Wiggins then urged family members to check on their elderly and make sure the nursing home is doing its job right. The best way to uncover a possible issue is by visiting the home during the afternoon or night shift.
“We couldn’t tell that it was a human. I thought it was a cat that they had brought in. The length of time that we spent banging, screaming and looking for assistance, she never came.”
Authorities Step in for an Investigation
The photos enraged the public and were shared over 20k times. With that, the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio Department of Aging initiated an investigation in the matter. Finally, Esther’s family submitted a complaint against Altercare Nobles Pond, stating:
“We were informed of a family complaint on February 15, 2019. We have followed the protocol established regarding any allegation, including immediately reporting the concern to the Ohio Department of Health and completing an internal investigation.”
The Brown family is certain the respective nursing home is neglecting its patients, a fact that will not leave them rest until justice is served.
