Science confirms having a sister makes you a happier person

Ask anyone who has a sibling and they will tell you, life with them is anything but boring. When it comes to having a sibling, studies explain there is plenty to benefit from it. Despite the nitpicking and a small fights, siblings are soothing to both the mind and the soul.

Growing up with as sibling means forming a lasting bond between you and another person. It means always having someone to go to, and always finding a friend within your family circle.

So, how exactly do siblings affects our quality of life?

The Benefits of Having a Sibling, According to Studies

Many studies have confirmed the blissfulness and benefits of having a sibling. One study carried out by Professor Laura Padilla-Walker, analyzed the effects of having a sibling within around 395 families. The families involved in the study had at least one child at the age of 10-14.

As soon as the study was completed the results showed somewhat staggering. Namely, research confirmed that children who had a sister for a sibling, had the chance to live a less troubling adolescent life. In addition, the study revealed that while siblings fought a lot, they also found a way to control both their negative behavior and emotional outbursts.

“Even after you account for parents’ influence, siblings do matter in unique ways,” said Padilla-Walker, a teacher in the field, “They give kids something that parents don’t.” Normally, what siblings provide for one another is a sense of being accepted and equal to someone and being understood by someone closer to your generation.

Having a Sister Boosts the Self-Confidence and Prevents Loneliness

Having siblings is great if you want to share your troubles with someone who is generally on your side. Sisters, in particular, are great comforters, nurturers and initiate positive thinking in their siblings.

With that, sisters can help eradicate symptoms of negative thoughts, depression, loneliness, and fear. Additionally, sisters help their siblings shake off more serious growing-up problems such as:

  • Mood swings and self-resentment.
  • Drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Eating disorders, like anorexia or overeating.
  • Self-inflicted pain and doing self-harm.
  • Depression and stress.
  • Loneliness and feelings of abandonment.
  • Emotional outbursts, especially during the teenage years.

Having a Sister Improves the Communication and Problem-Solving Skills

Fights among siblings are quite normal and healthy to some extent. More specifically, by having arguments with your sister, many siblings learn how to communicate better and resolve altercations as a result.

Many children who have sister for a sibling learn how to deal with problems more effectively. Learning to behave and respond adequately to certain situations is very important while growing up. Because of this, having a sister around can improve a sibling’s personality, especially in terms of adulthood.

Having a sister means always having an extra pair of eyes and ears and a neutral point of view. With that, sisters encourage proper character development in their siblings, while keeping them away from trouble at the same time.

Still, it is important that it is not just sisters who bring positive energy in the relationship between siblings. Brothers, too, have a very large impact on how their siblings behave, think and grow. All in all, having a sibling by your side is a beneficial way to learn and grow alongside a human being that is totally different from yourself. This, as the study explains, leaves plenty of room for prosperity, proper personality development as well as learning. So, instead of getting angry with your sibling, how about giving them a hug and a big ‘Thank you’ for all they are unconsciously doing to benefit your wellbeing?
