The fountain of youth has yet to be found, but you can actually help your mother and grandmother live longer. Yes, that’s what latest studies suggest.
A group of researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found that loneliness makes aging even worse. Aging is a natural process, and elderly experience a decline. Researchers observed 1,600 adults aged around 71, and followed information about participants’ socioeconomic status and health. The results showed that lonely individuals had high mortality rate. About 23% of the lonely adults died in the first six years of the study. It was found that 14% of those individuals had someone they spend time with.
“The need we’ve had our entire lives — people who know us, value us, who bring us joy — that never goes away,” Barbara Moscowitz, senior geriatric social worker at Massachusetts General Hospital, said in her interview.
The elderly appreciate the relationship they have with other people, and do not really pay attention to other details or problems. Rosemary Blieszner, a professor of human development at Virginia Tech, said everything comes down to important relational skills. These skills have been nurtured for many years.
“They’re pretty tolerant of friends’ imperfections and idiosyncrasies, more than young adults,” the professor said. “You bring a lot more experience to your friendships when you’re older. You know what’s worth fighting about and not worth fighting about.”
